Farhikhtegan Hospital is the largest teaching, treatment and research hospital affiliated with the Islamic Azad University (one of Iran’s largest non‑governmental university systems). Built with a “patient‑centered” approach and modern equipment, the hospital opened on 10 February 2019 (21 Bahman 1397 in the Iranian calendar) in the presence of Dr. Velayati (Chairman of the University’s Board of Trustees), Dr. Saeed Namaki (then Minister of Health) and Dr. Tehranchi (President of Islamic Azad University).
Key clinical departments and facilities
Internal medicine, general and specialty surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics & gynecology, operating rooms, outpatient clinics, emergency department, adult ICU, CCU (cardiac ICU), surgical ICU, laboratory & pathobiology, pharmacy, radiology, CT, ultrasound, endoscopy — all equipped to international standards.
Governance & management
An executive‑board model (Heyat‑e Ameli) with independent financial and procurement bylaws — approved by the university’s Board of Trustees — was piloted at Farhikhtegan from summer 2019 and remains in force to provide hospital‑appropriate administrative flexibility.
COVID response
Shortly after opening, Farhikhtegan became one of the designated hospital centers for COVID‑19 and provided continuous care through the pandemic.
Phase II & new services
With Ministry approval and despite economic challenges, active beds were increased to 260. New units implemented or launched include dialysis, NICU (neonatal ICU), surgical ICU, CT imaging, urology, nephrology, kidney transplant, angiography & cardiac surgery, bone densitometry, an International Patient Department (IPD), and a Health Monitoring Center.
Education & research
The hospital holds teaching accreditation from Iran’s Ministry of Health and hosts an active research center recognized as a top research unit within Islamic Azad University’s medical sciences.
Future plans & innovations
Upcoming clinical units under licensing or planning: neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, maxillofacial surgery, physiotherapy, dentistry; advanced transplant programs (liver, pancreas, bone‑marrow), a comprehensive stem‑cell & regenerative medicine center. In cooperation with private partners the hospital plans to add nuclear medicine, MRI, mammography, CT‑angiography, a comprehensive cancer center (including radiotherapy), lithotripsy and ophthalmology.
Digital & smart hospital initiatives
Farhikhtegan is moving toward a SMART Hospital model: telemedicine, online laboratory and imaging reporting, and a full electronic health record (EHR) system are already being implemented.
